WILLIAM (Bill) J SCANLAN, of Eureka, Missouri, passed away October 12, 2024 at the age of 90 years, 6 months, and 27 days. Mr. Scanlan was born March 15, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to William M and Agnes M (nee Hemker) Scanlan. He was united in marriage to Mary L Dickey on July 30, 1955 at South Hampton Presbyterian Church. Mr. Scanlan is preceded in death by both his parents, his sister, Geraldine (Gerry) Gerren; one son, Gary J Scanlan; and one grandson, Gary Scanlan Jr.
Mr. Scanlan is survived by his wife, Mary of 69 years; his children, Dennis (Lisa) Scanlan and Adam (Peggy) Scanlan; Grandchildren, Anna (Jim) Little, KShe (Anthony M) Giancola, Brendan Scanlan (Amanda), Ross Scanlan (Morgan), Chase Scanlan (Lara), Lacee Kilgore (Darryl), Dana (Sarah) West; Great and Great-Great grandchildren as follows: Alena (Donnie), Thomas (Micela), Anthony R, Jacob, Trevon, Madelyn, Jacoby, and Jason; Bill is also survived by his younger brother Bob (Pam) Scanlan, and many other relatives to include nieces, nephews, cousins and In-Laws and many close friends.
Bill’s fondest childhood memories are hunting and fishing with his father; winning a sack race to get his first bow and arrow; and building his model air planes.
His earliest ambitions were to become a pilot; become a pro-bowler; and to get married and have a family.
Things that make him smile: a good joke; a big bowl of ice cream; and seeing his wife happy.
His proudest family moments are: seeing his children and grandchildren accomplish their education, getting married and raising their own families.
His proudest career accomplishments are: retiring from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft and obtaining an Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force and being accepted into the U.S. Air Force Aviation Cadets.
Mr. Scanlan was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal from the United States Air Force. Three Presenteeism Awards from McDonald Douglas. He was President of the Men’s Club, Board of Trustees and Deacons, the Couples Club, as well as Treasurer at Tyler Place Presbyterian Church; he also achieved Scoutmaster and Unit Commissioner titles.
His favorite songs were On Eagles Wing, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, and Amazing Grace. His favorite color was blue.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, various card games, dancing, puzzles, casinos, and various sports as well as flowers, traveling and eating sweets.
Visitation for Mr. Scanlan is Monday, October 21, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Bell Funeral Home, Pacific, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Interment with full military honors will follow the service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
